What is a Songkeeper?  It is a player of the Native American Flute who creates and shares meaningful melodies that connect and inspire others.  Songs that reflect the players personality, individuality, and own life-story.  Another important trait of a Songkeeper is that they have obtained the ability to play "cleanly", "in-tune" and with "control" and "fully expressively".  Indigenous music has purpose.  It has meaning.  It has direction.  The roots of the Native American Flute are deep in those things and the SONGS that share stories.  Everyone comes from Mother Earth and we all have a connection to musical self-expression.

However, the path of a Songkeeper is not for everyone.  It is common today for most players of the NAF to mostly just improve while they struggle to advance their techniques in a purposeful direction.  In fact, by far most players never develop their own, original songs that they can share with others.   This has resulted in a modern trend with flute that is moving away from the deeper, personal music connection found in its roots and all indigenous cultures.
