NEWS!!! NEWS!!! February 3rd, 2011 - Jan Michael announces that he is taking a break from touring in 2011.
After over 400 concerts across the country spanning 8 years and 17 commercially released recordings garnering multiple national awards, Jan Michael announced today that he will be taking a break from touring and performing to spend more time with his family. He has two upcoming shows - 2/11 and 3/12. After those concerts, no plans in sight for more large venues or tours. Taking a relaxed breath, Jan Michael shares, "Of course I will always step up for my Tribe or local charities when called upon to speak or perform. But other than that, yep, it's time for a break. I also work for my Tribe and teach university courses, those commitments are very important as well."
Promotions and distributions for his new recordings "Message From the Sun" and "Live As One" are moving forward as planned. His music continues to climb national/international radio charts and his vision of One Heart and Unity remains clear. With a smile, he goes on, "This is not the end of my music. The new CD 'Message From the Sun' contains the best flute melodies that I've ever recorded. This is just a break, a breath and exhale. I am thankful to the Creator for all the blessings - the music, friends and fans, my Tribe, students, and amazing family. Right now my son is thriving and finding his own path. And my work at the Tribe is busier than ever. This is just a time thing....but not the end. I expect to record again in a few years."
He has nearly 800 students per year who study the Native American Flute under an accredited curriculum that Jan Michael has developed. And, working with close friend Odell Borg, Jan's beautiful new signature flute will be available to the public soon.
With tears in his eyes, Jan Michael holds his flute, "I so appreciate all the support and really hope that this medicine, this gift that the Creator gave me somehow helps your journeys. I will always play my flutes every day, its part of who I am."

After a successful three-year journey into the rock genre with his Native American flutes and a full touring band, Jan Michael Looking Wolf returns to his roots with “Message From the Sun”. Produced and released by High Spirits out of Arizona, Jan Michael again delivers masterful wooden Native American flute performances that took nearly a year to record. With over a dozen flutes, each with heartfelt musical expressions that range from solo flutes with a gentle canon sound, double flutes, three flute harmonies, and flute with upbeat natural world percussion. One of the most renowned native flutists in the world, Jan Michael takes his artistry of the instrument to a new level.
From a recent interview, Jan Michael Looking Wolf softly speaks, “The experience of recording this music was the most amazing journey. It was like a voice building up inside over the past 3 years and finally being released. We wanted to make a native flute CD that combined the purity of ancient, indigenous sounds with original melodies that would keep the listener interested. I am so thankful to be part of it all.”
“Unity”, his prior traditional flute recording, was released in 2007 and received national honors including being the only Native American flute recording to ever win Flutist of the Year at the Native American Music Awards and Best Native Flute at the Indian Summer Music Awards within the same calendar year. It was also accepted as a GRAMMY submission in the Native American Category.
“Message From the Sun” is available now at high spirits and is slated to be distributed internationally. Jan Michael will be touring select venues in 2011 at large festivals and performing art centers with a concert presentation that includes accompaniment by Nathan Myers, Native American Dancers, and a beautiful slide show.
Jan Michael Looking Wolf is a three-time Native American Music Award Winner, including wins for Flutist of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Record of the Year. Jan Michael's lifeway and musical expressions are based on the Native American Tradition of 'One Heart'. In short, it is the belief that we are equal regardless of the color of our skin, tribal affiliation, language we speak, income, gender, faith, nationality, etc.. It is the recognition of Unity through Diversity. A passionate humanitarian, Jan Michael frequently performs at charity events nation-wide and his flute music has been used for several non-profit projects.
